York House Richmond Wedding Photographer
Some days are simple and quiet, but somehow the most important of your life. Olivia & Matt’s legal vows at York House in Richmond were exactly that. No big production, no packed schedule, just a handful of people, a beautiful setting, and warm sunlight.
I’d already been booked to photograph their destination wedding in Nîmes later that September, which was always going to be a full, sun-soaked, all-out kind of celebration. But a few weeks before that, they decided they wanted their legal vows in London photographed too, and honestly, I’ll always say yes to that.
Because these moments matter just as much.
There’s something about splitting a wedding into two parts that gives each one its own space. The legal ceremony often ends up being quieter, more stripped back, sometimes even more emotional because there’s nowhere to hide. No big crowd, no distractions, just the two of you actually doing the thing. As a documentary wedding photographer, those are the moments I’m always drawn to.
York House in Richmond is a venue that makes everything feel elevated without trying too hard. The building itself is beautiful, but the real magic is in the grounds. Open space, riverside air, and just grand enough to make it feel special without tipping into anything too formal. It has to be one of the UK’s most beautiful registry offices, and as a London wedding photographer, it’s always a bit of a gift to shoot there.
Olivia wore a Grecian-style cream midi dress that felt perfectly in tune with the whole day; elegant, understated, no fuss. Matt went for a relaxed linen suit, which immediately set the tone, this wasn’t about formality, it was about feeling comfortable, like themselves.
The ceremony itself was intimate. Just both sets of parents, gathered in, present for every second. No excess, no noise, just a really simple, meaningful moment. Afterwards, we drifted down towards the river with a bottle of champagne, glasses clinking, everyone relaxing into it properly now that the official part was done.
This is where I tend to switch between digital and 35mm film photography without thinking too much about it. Digital for the quick moments, the reactions, the things that happen fast. Film for the slower, quieter frames, the ones that feel like they already belong to memory. As a 35mm film wedding photographer, there’s something about days like this that suits it perfectly. Nothing rushed, nothing forced, just light and people and time to notice both.
They told me they were heading off for drinks and dinner nearby afterwards, which felt like the exact right ending. No big send-off, no tight timeline, just carrying on the day in their own way, somewhere along the river, probably still slightly buzzing from it all.
Being both a London elopement photographer means I get to see both sides of this. The big, all-out celebrations and the quieter, more intimate days. And honestly, having both documented gives you a fuller picture of your story. The calm before the party. The legal moment before the celebration in France. Two completely different energies, both equally worth remembering.
Olivia & Matt’s day was simple, thoughtful, and effortlessly stylish. The kind of afternoon that doesn’t need much dressing up—just good people, a beautiful place, and a reason to open a bottle of champagne by the river.
